If you or your child has misshapen, overly large, or protruding ears that are impacting confidence in a damaging way, Dr. Craft offers ear surgery (otoplasty) to correct the areas of concern.
What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty is surgery that is performed to address misshapen ears or ears that protrude from the head, providing a proportional balance to the face.
This can be a particularly beneficial procedure for those whose ears have had a negative effect on their self-esteem, or children who get teased by others.
Ear surgery can:
- Address prominent ears that stick out from the head
- Decrease the size of abnormally large ears
- Improve the appearance of misshapen ears
Ear surgery procedure details
Ear surgery can be performed on both children and adults, and the procedure may take up to two hours. Depending on what is being treated, the surgery will be done under general or local anesthesia. The exact details of the operation will be determined by the type of surgery being done: ear pinning, ear re-shaping, or ear re-sizing. During your consultation with Dr. Craft, he will take you step-by-step through the procedure and what you can expect.
Recovery
After ear surgery, bandages or an ear bolster will be put onto the ears to help with swelling and healing. Recovery time will be determined by each specific patient and which ear procedure they undergo. We will provide you with detailed home care instructions to follow for a smooth recovery.
If the patient is a child, we usually recommend that their otoplasty be performed during a school break, such as the summer or winter, in order for there to be enough healing time. For children, it’s also very important that they understand that they must not touch their ears during the recovery period.
There may be swelling, numbness, or tenderness where the incisions were made, but these will subside. Sutures will be removed within 14 days. During this time, you should avoid sleeping on your side, as well as strenuous activities like sports or working out. These instructions are important for children to understand and obey.
Most patients are able to return to work, school, and other daily activities within 1 to 2 weeks. Final results are apparent in about three weeks, and these results are permanent.
