If you’re looking for an effective, minimally invasive treatment to reduce the appearance of scars, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation, microneedling is an excellent treatment to achieve this and get silkier, healthier, smoother skin.
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation treatment that enhances the texture of the skin by using a hand-held device. This device includes very small needles (like acupuncture needles) to puncture the skin, causing thousands of tiny “micro injuries” that cause the formation of new collagen and skin tissue. The result is smoother, firmer, more toned skin.
What does microneedling treat?
Microneedling is mostly used on the face, and can greatly improve a variety of trouble spots, including:
- Scars
- Wrinkles
- Uneven skin texture
- Enlarged pores
- Hyperpigmentation
- Dull skin
- Sagging skin
How microneedling works
The micro injuries that are caused by the device’s tiny needles cause the body’s natural healing process to kick in. This healing process sends collagen and elastin to repair and rejuvenate the skin, and the micro injuries are replaced with brand-new dermal tissues and blood vessels. This helps the skin to become thicker, more elastic, and more youthful. Microneedling can also be paired with antioxidants and vitamins to trigger even more new collagen.
Downtime
One of the best things about microneedling is that it requires very little downtime. Patients may experience redness of the skin, some swelling, and pinpoint bleeding, but these are very temporary. Regular skin care and activities can be resumed the next day.
Your skin may also feel raw and itchy for a day or two. The more aggressive the microneedling treatment is, the longer these side effects may last. Deeper levels of penetration on concentrated areas can mean a little more downtime.
Results
Patients will notice improvement to their skin in 2 to 4 weeks following their microneedling treatment, with final results becoming apparent in six months (after having follow-up appointments). The skin will be softer and more radiant, with smaller pores and an incredible glow.
You will also notice that your topical skin products work more effectively after microneedling. This is because the products are able to sink into the skin more deeply, which allows them to reach farther and work better.
For best results, Dr. Craft recommends 3 to 6 treatments scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart; however, more severe conditions may take up to 6 to 8 treatments.
